Introduction of the Farm Area in the Japanese Government Pavilion (First Round of Publication of Displays)
Hello Kitty to appear dressed as various types of algae
September 20, 2024
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will exhibit the Japanese Government Pavilion (or Japan Pavilion as an abbreviation) at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. It will consist of three areas, namely the Plant Area, Farm Area, and Factory Area. These areas represent an approach to circulation, an idea underlying Japanese culture, in a variety of forms that visitors can experience.
METI introduces here some displays featuring algae to be exhibited in the Farm Area.

1. Hello Kitty to introduce the attractiveness of and potential for algae
Algae have existed all over the earth for a longer time than humans. Although we are barely aware of algae, they have recently been attracting attention as a key solution to common challenges for all humans, including global warming and food problems.
Aiming to further increase people's interest in various algae as a possible solution to such challenges, Hello Kitty, a mascot loved around the world, will appear dressed as algae and introduce to visitors the attractiveness of and infinite potential for algae.
Hello Kitty appearing as different types of algae has been developed under the sponsorship of Sanrio Company, Ltd. and will be showcased at the Japan Pavilion.

2. Photobioreactor, a system for culturing algae, to provide visitors with a soothing and relaxing experience like forest bathing

A photobioreactor, a system installed in the Farm Area, efficiently cultivates microscopic algae, called spirulina, using only a small amount of water and light energy, and creates a fantastic space where the overlapping algae and a gentle light like that from the sun come together to provide visitors with a soothing and relaxing experience like forest bathing.
METI will exhibit algae, together with a photobioreactor, in the area in cooperation with Chitose Laboratory Corporation, a company that proudly owns breeding and cultivation technology for a wide variety of living organisms.

Three areas representing the circulation of waste to water, water to materials, and materials to products

The Japan Pavilion represents circulation in three areas. The Plant Area showcases the process in which microorganisms work to break down waste and transform it to water, the source of all life. The Farm Area highlights the process in which the power of algae and carbon recycling technology that Japan boasts produce materials for manufacturing. The Factory Area demonstrates the process in which visitors can discover sustainable products that maintain the passion and skills of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
In addition, the Japan Pavilion will act as a device that collects waste from the exposition site and breaks it down into water, biogas, and other green substances using the power of microorganisms. The pavilion will cultivate algae by making use of inorganic materials, including water, carbon dioxide, and energy. The algae cultivated in the pavilion will be transformed into new products, such as food and industrial products. After finishing their roles in people's everyday lives, these products will once again turn to waste and will eventually return to nature.
By passing through the pavilion, visitors may experience the process of circulation thanks to the installation displays, and observe, be aware of, and reflect on those things that exist between one life and another.
METI will publish the details of the areas from time to time.
