The 17th Japan-China Energy Conservation and Environment Forum Held

Mr. Muto Yoji, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the 17th Japan-China Energy Conservation and Environment Forum held in Tokyo on Saturday, November 9, 2024.
On Saturday, November 9, 2024, the 17th Japan-China Energy Conservation and Environment Forum was held in Tokyo.
The 17th forum was held in an in-person format for the first time in five years since 2019, when the 13th one was held. The forum brought together about 650 stakeholders from the public and private sectors in both Japan and China, including Minister Muto, Mr. Asao Keiichiro, Minister of the Environment, Mr. Iwata Kazuchika, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Shindo Kosei, head of the Japan-China Economic Association, from the Japanese side, and H.E. Mr. Zhao Chenxin, Vice Chairman, National Development and Reform Commission, H.E. Mr. Li Fei, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Commerce, and H.E. Mr. Wu Jianghao, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan, from the Chinese side.
Memorandums for the establishment of 27 new Japan-China cooperation projects were exchanged at the forum (see the Appendix). With these exchanges, the number of such projects has come to 457 since the inauguration of the forum in 2006.
At the plenary meeting, Minister Muto stated the importance of simultaneously achieving the three efforts of decarbonization, economic growth, and energy security, and also the significance of aiming at the common goal of net-zero emissions through various pathways by leveraging all types of technologies and energy sources. In addition, stating that achieving carbon neutrality is a common goal between Japan and China, he showed his expectations for further enhancing Japan-China cooperation, taking advantage of this forum as a catalyst.
After the plenary meeting, the forum featured five sessions, titled Energy Conservation, Introduction of Electrified and Smarter Vehicles, Hydrogen and Ammonia, Japan-China Long-term Trading (Green Trade and Investment), and Introduction of Housing and Buildings Greening, which was included for the first time. Stakeholders from the public and private sectors in both Japan and China exchanged views at these sessions.
