In April 2021, the Japanese government announced its basic policy of discharging the ALPS treated water into the sea approximately two years later. The Japanese government formally requested the IAEA to conduct a review of the safety of the discharge of the ALPS treated water into the sea, and in July of the same year, the Japanese government and the IAEA signed a Terms of Reference and agreed to conduct a review of the safety of the ALPS treated water, including (1) a technical review, (2) a regulatory review, and (3) independent sampling and the data corroboration analysis.
Since the discharge of the ALPS treated water into the sea, two reviews of the safety of the discharge of the ALPS treated water into the sea have been conducted by the IAEA Task Force. The first review was conducted in October 2023, and the report was published in January 2024. The second review was conducted in April 2024, and the report was published in July 2024.
