UAE-Japan Space Sector Joint Workshop Held in the United Arab Emirates

On Thursday, December 12, 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Cabinet Office (CAO), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) held a UAE-Japan Space Sector Joint Workshop together with the The UAE Space Agency(UAESA). The goal of the workshop was to promote Japan-UAE cooperation in the field of space.
Japan and the United Arab Emirates signed the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Space Activities for Peaceful Purposes between the Cabinet Office of Japan, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry of Japan and the UAE Space Agency during then-Prime Minister Kishida’s visit to the UAE in July 2023. Based on this MOC, on December 12, 2024, METI, CAO, JAXA, and JETRO held a UAE-Japan Space Sector Joint Workshop in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, jointly with the UAE Space Agency. The aim of the workshop was to promote Japan-UAE cooperation in the field of space.
The workshop brought together about 200 stakeholders in total from the public and private sectors in the field of space in Japan and the UAE. Representatives from Japan included Mr. URATA Hideyuki, Deputy Director-General, Manufacturing Industries Bureau, METI; Mr. MATSUMOTO Hideto, Director, National Space Policy Secretariat, CAO; Mr. YAMAKAWA Hiroshi, President, JAXA; Mr. OKANIWA Ken, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the UAE; Mr. NAKAJIMA Nobuyuki, Managing Director, JETRO Dubai Office; and other government officials as well as representatives of 26 Japanese companies engaging in space-related businesses, including startups and large companies. Representatives from the UAE included H.E. Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director General, UAE Space Agency (UAESA); H.E. Shihab Al Faheem, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the UAE to Japan; H.E. Omar Suwaina Al-Suwaidi, Undersecretary, Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT); H.E. Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General, Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC); and other government officials as well as representatives of 23 space-related companies.
At the workshop, representatives of the Japanese and UAE governments and the space organizations explained the latest space policies, initiatives, plans, and the cooperation areas between Japan and the UAE. In addition, participants from the public and private sectors proactively exchanged views for future cooperation between Japan and the UAE, focusing on each priority field in the space policies of the UAE government.
Moreover, on the same day, Mr. URATA Hideyuki, Deputy Director-General, Manufacturing Industries Bureau, METI held meetings with H.E. Salem Butti Salem Al Qubaisi, Director General, UAESA, and H.E. Omar Suwaina Al-Suwaidi, Undersecretary, MoIAT. The two sides exchanged views on further cooperation in the space industry between Japan and the UAE going forward.
