Minister Muto Holds Meeting with IAEA Director General Grossi

On Thursday, February 20, 2025, Mr. Muto Yoji, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). At the meeting, both sides discussed the IAEA’s cooperation on the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), including the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea. They also discussed enhanced collaboration with the IAEA involving the utilization of nuclear energy.

Regarding the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea, Minister Muto expressed gratitude for the IAEA’s commitment to continuous monitoring and reviews from an independent standpoint, including the additional measures under the IAEA framework, and for the dissemination of the results of the monitoring and reviews in a transparent manner. In addition, Minister Muto stated that Japan will continue to work on the decommissioning of FDNPS in a safe and steady manner, including the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea.
In response, Director General Grossi stated that the IAEA will continue its cooperation on Japan’s efforts.

Moreover, Minister Muto mentioned the Seventh Strategic Energy Plan , on which a Cabinet Decision was made this week. He explained that the plan clearly states Japan’s maximum use of not only renewable energy but also nuclear energy and its enhanced collaboration with the IAEA as efforts to secure decarbonized energy sources that satisfy an increase in electricity demand and requested the IAEA to continue providing cooperation.
In response, Director General Grossi stated that the IAEA will continue its cooperation on the utilization of nuclear energy in Japan.
