As a Part of Additional Measures under the IAEA Framework, ALPS Treated Water was Sampled on the Premises of TEPCO’s FDNPS for the First Time

February 21, 2025

On February 21st, IAEA officials and experts from third-party laboratories sampled ALPS treated water on the premises of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO)’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) for the first time.

As a part of additional measures under the IAEA framework, the IAEA officials and experts from third-party laboratories visited Japan and collected samples from February 19th to 21st.

In September 2024, Japan and the IAEA concurred in conducting the additional measures under the IAEA framework. These additional measures were conducted following the measures in October 2024.

On February 21st, IAEA officials and experts from laboratories from China, France, Republic of Korea, and Switzerland sampled ALPS treated water prior to dilution from measurement/confirmation tanks on the premises of TEPCO’s FDNPS for the first time.

Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will continue to maintain close coordination with the IAEA in sharing information with the international community in a highly transparent manner and fostering better understanding of the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water within both the domestic and international communities.

*Measurement/confirmation tanks: The tanks used to receive ALPS treated water from the storage tanks etc. on the premises of TEPCO’s FDNPS, and to circulate and stir ALPS treated water to collect representative samples for the analysis prior to the dilution and discharge.
