Overview of the program

Japan is home to around 20,000 startups taking on new challenges every day. In June 2018, METI inaugurated the J-Startup program as an initiative to incubate startups that develop new technologies and business models to provide new value to the rest of the world.

METI, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) together organized a secretariat, and the secretariat has been operating the program. Under the program, a variety of efforts have been advancing to support startups in exhibiting displays at overseas and domestic events, expanding business overseas, conducting research and development, addressing regulatory reforms, gaining more opportunities to participate in bidding processes, collaborating with private companies that are part of J-Startup Supporters, and so on.

METI has selected 239 startups in total in a little under seven years since the inauguration of the program. Under the fifth round of the program this time, METI selected 31 startups as J-Startup companies.

METI will continue to work on uniting public and private efforts to provide intensive support to startups so that Japan can incubate internationally competitive and winning startups.
