Minister Muto Holds Meeting with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO)

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Mr. Muto Yoji, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a meeting with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). They exchanged views on maintaining and strengthening the rules-based multilateral trading system and WTO reform, and confirmed their close collaboration towards the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14).

Minister Muto stressed the importance of the rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, while also expressing his strong commitment to WTO reform. In particular, he stated that Japan will continue to contribute to addressing various important issues including dispute settlement system reform; the early implementation of the outcomes of plurilateral negotiations, including the Agreement on Electronic Commerce co-chaired by Japan; the extension of the Moratorium on Customs Duties on Electronic Transmission; addressing non-market policies and practices and ensuring a level playing field.
