Japan-Ukraine Public-Private Roundtable Held in Rome, the Italian Republic

On Wednesday, July 9, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held the Japan-Ukraine Public-Private Roundtable by inviting related parties from the governments and companies of Ukraine and surrounding countries, such as those in Central and Eastern Europe.

On Wednesday, July 9, the Japan-Ukraine Public-Private Roundtable was held in Rome, the Italian Republic, hosted by METI and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). 
Attending from the Japanese side were METI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and companies in the private sector. From Ukraine, members of the Ministry of Economy and the municipal government of Lviv attended. Further, from countries surrounding Ukraine, such as those in Central and Eastern Europe, the Investment and Trade Agency of the Republic of Poland as well as companies of countries including the Czech Republic, the Republic of Türkiye and the Republic of Lithuania sent participants to the roundtable.

In her opening speech at the meeting, H.E. Ms. Yulia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, thanked the Government of Japan for its technological support for energy and the recovery and maintenance of Ukraine’s infrastructures as well as for its humanitarian assistance. The minister also expressed her gratitude to JETRO Kyiv for its local activities and to UNIDO and JICA for their support. Then she expressed her expectation for future support from Japan to foster Ukraine’s industrialization, which is a key to the country’s recovery. Mr. Andriy Sadovyy, Mayor of Lviv, outlined the measures implemented by the city to fulfill its role as a base for Ukraine’s recovery and hoped for participation by Japanese companies in the industrial park and other projects to be implemented in the city.

Mr. Fujii Hisayuki, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who represented the Government of Japan at the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2025 (URC2025), expressed his expectation for a surge in global momentum for the recovery of Ukraine, listing the following as key driving factors: the dispatch of public-private missions to Kyiv and Lviv by METI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JETRO; public-private partnership projects implemented through ODA; and the Ukraine Mine Action Conference 2025 to be held in Japan from October 22 to 23. Moreover, METI has shown its intention to strongly support Ukraine through the enhancement of bilateral cooperation under the collaboration projects promoted by companies in the private sector and others; demonstration projects implemented via UNIDO for the concretization of relevant project plans; the 26 billion yen recovery support project to be implemented in collaboration with countries surrounding Ukraine, such as those in Central and Eastern Europe; and through the continuous dispatch of public-private missions to Ukraine.

In addition, a panel discussion was held for Japan to enhance support for the recovery of Ukraine in cooperation with surrounding countries, such as those in Central and Eastern Europe, with the participation of Ms. Markéta Řeháková, Advisor to the Governmental Envoy for Ukraine, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic; Mr. Andrzej Dycha, Chairman of the Board, Polish Investment and Trade Agency; and Mr. Andrii Teliupa, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine; and others as panelists. They proactively discussed the possibility of enhancing cooperation between Japan and other countries toward the recovery of Ukraine.

METI will continue to implement initiatives such as the ones described above to support the recovery of Ukraine and help foster the economic growth of the country going forward.
