METI Holds Discussions on the Decommissioning and Future of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station with Local Residents and Technical Experts from within Japan and Abroad at the 9th International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

The 9th International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was held over two days, from Sunday, August 3, to Monday, August 4, in Fukushima Prefecture (August 3: Katsurao Village, August 4: Iwaki City), under the auspices of the Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation.

The purposes of this forum are, with regard to the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, (1) to disseminate accurate and transparent information both domestically and internationally, (2) to promote mutual understanding through careful and ongoing communication with local residents, and (3) to share the latest information and technical achievements by domestic and international experts regarding the decommissioning of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Ogushi attended the forum and explained the progress of the decommissioning work at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, efforts to ensure the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and to disseminate information on the discharge, as well as efforts toward industrial reconstruction in Fukushima. He also stated that Japan will make efforts to realize creative reconstruction so that Fukushima Prefecture will overcome the unprecedentedly complex disasters and become a leading region in resolving social challenges. In this way, State Minister Ogushi proactively disseminated information to people both in Japan and abroad.

Furthermore, the panel discussion in which Director-General of Fukushima Reconstruction Promotion Group Tsujimoto participated, provided an opportunity for local residents to engage in direct dialogue with those involved in the decommissioning work, deepening their shared understanding of the decommissioning and future of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Furthermore, domestic and international experts gave presentations and exchanged opinions on the latest status of decommissioning efforts around the world.

The decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is a technically very difficult task that has no precedent in the world. The Government of Japan will continue to demonstrate leadership in this endeavor.
