August 20, 2025

On Tuesday, August 19, Mr. Koga Yuichiro, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, received a courtesy call from H.E. Ms. Fatou Haidara, Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director of the Directorate of Global Partnerships and External Relations of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Both sides agreed to work towards smooth progress of the demonstration program involving countries in the Global South and the project supporting the recovery of Ukraine. Aiming to maximize their outcomes, both sides exchanged views on further strengthening of cooperation and collaboration.

Overview of the meeting

State Minister Koga stated that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will contribute to facilitating investment in and technology transfer to developing countries that show synergy with METI’s policies by leveraging the UNIDO Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform (STePP)1 project, which introduces Japan’s outstanding technologies in the field of environment, energy, and other areas. Mr. Koga and Ms. Haidara exchanged views on the progress of the demonstration program involving countries in the Global South and the project supporting the recovery of Ukraine, both of which are based on the joint declaration signed in July 2024. They also discussed further strengthening of cooperation and collaboration to ensure the smooth progress of these projects moving forward.

Note 1: This project aims to introduce developing countries to Japan’s outstanding technologies that may contribute to sustainable development of the industries in those countries. The term “STePP” is an acronym for “Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform.”
