India-Japan Economic Forum Held

On Friday, August 29, the Japan-India Economic Forum was held, co-hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), the Japan-India Business Co-operation Committee (JIBCC), and the Embassy of India in Japan. Mr. Muto Yoji, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, delivered remarks for the forum. In the forum, 170 memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and other documents signed by private enterprises were announced in the presence of Mr. Ishiba Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, and Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, highlighting the deepening of Japan-India economic relations, the promotion of private sector business, and the potential for further collaboration in the future.

1. About the Japan-India Economic Forum

Taking the opportunity of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Japan, the Japan-India Economic Forum was held on Friday, August 29, co-hosted by METI, JETRO, Keidanren, JIBCC, and the Embassy of India in Japan. Participants included government officials and representatives from business communities of both Japan and India. The program of the forum included speeches by the two Prime Ministers, the announcement of 170 private-sector MOUs concluded over the past two years or so, and a report on the Joint Statement of the India-Japan Business Leaders Forum.

2. Remarks by Minister Muto

At the beginning of his closing remarks, Minister Muto offered his congratulations on the announcement of 170 MOUs in the presence of Prime Minister Ishiba and Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing the strengthening of Japan-India economic relations. He welcomed the wide-ranging discussions held in the forum, including those on expanding people-to-people exchanges, cooperation in advanced technologies, and economic security. Minister Muto expressed his commitment to further promote Japan-India economic relations, emphasizing that enhancing cooperation in these areas will support the growth of the next generation.

3. Highlights of the Forum

(1) Session 1: Expansion of people-to-people exchanges

Mr. Hiratani Haruyuki, CEO, Takasago Fluidic Systems(TFS), Mr. Umezawa Ryo, Vice President of India Operations, Mercari, Inc., and Mr. Yamada Yuichiro, CEO, Findy Inc., joined a panel discussion on exchanges in fields such as highly skilled human resources for the next generation of the Japan-India economy.

(2) Session 2: Cooperation in advanced industries (space and quantum computing)

Speakers included Mr. Vivek Mahajan, CTO of FUJITSU Limited, Mr. Kato Hideki, President & Managing Director, Astroscale Japan., and Mr. Takahama Wataru, Director of the Space Industry Division at METI. They discussed Japan-India cooperation in cutting-edge fields such as semiconductors, space, and aerospace industries.

(3) Session 3: Cooperation in next-generation energy and mobility

Mr. Enomoto Yoshiyuki, Managing Officer, Country Chairperson in India, Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Mr. Suzuki Koichi, Managing Officer, Executive General Manager, India operations, Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Ms. Tanaka Masako, Executive Officer, Green Innovation Development Center, Air Water Inc., participated in a discussion on approaches to the Indian markets and global markets through Japan-India collaboration in science and technology. Minister of the Environment Asao also delivered a speech.

(4) Presentation ceremony for private sector MOUs

A total of 170 MOUs and other agreements concluded since 2023 were announced in the presence of Prime Minister Ishiba and Prime Minister Modi.
