Minister Akazawa Holds Meeting with U. S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick

As part of his current visit to Washington, D.C., the United States, Mr. Akazawa Ryosei, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the Japan-US beef promotion reception on Wednesday, February 11, and held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick on Thursday, February 12.

1. Meeting with U. S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick

On Thursday, February 12 (local time), Minister Akazawa met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick at the U.S. Department of Commerce and exchanged views on the Japan-US Strategic Investment Initiative.

The two sides engaged in an in-depth discussion about the Strategic Investment Initiative toward announcing the first project. The governments of Japan and the United States have been holding discussions on various levels from legal and strategic perspectives. While confirming progress of these discussions, the two parties concurred to continue working closely to accelerate coordination and structure projects that are mutually beneficial to Japan and the United States.

2. Promotion of export of agricultural products (Wagyu beef)

On Wednesday, February 11 (local time), Minister Akazawa attended the World Beef Classic, a Japan-US beef promotion reception held at the official residence of the Ambassador of Japan in the United States. Wagyu beef produced in Iwate Prefecture was served along with a selection of sake at the venue for participants from Japan and the United States, including U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Minister Akazawa highlighted the appeal of Wagyu beef, one of Japan’s most renowned products.
