Logo and Symbol for the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2027 Belgrade Announced
May 15, 2026
Preparations for the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2027 Belgrade set to take place in the City of Belgrade, the Republic of Serbia, are underway. On Friday, May 15, 2026, marking one year until the opening, we are pleased to announce the selection of the official logo and symbol for the Japan Pavilion.
1. The Government of Japan’s Participation in Expo 2027 Belgrade
Under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All,” Expo 2027 Belgrade will be held from Saturday, May 15, 2027, through Sunday, August 15, 2027, in the City of Belgrade, the Republic of Serbia, as an exhibition recognized by Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). The Government of Japan will officially participate in Expo 2027 Belgrade, with Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as the lead ministry, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as the deputy lead ministry, and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) as the participating organization.
The theme of the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2027 Belgrade is "Play and Connect, Together, Playful Spirit of Japan." Presented by Japan, the host country of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, the pavilion builds upon the legacy of the Expo, such as "Designing Future Society for Our Lives" and "Unity in Diversity," and is positioned as a platform to further develop these concepts. The logo and symbol were selected as the design that most symbolically expresses the value and message the pavilion aims to communicate under Expo 2027 Belgrade’s theme of “play.”

3. Design Concept of the Logo and Symbol
The logo and symbol are a “paper-cut floral” motif carved from a single sheet of paper.
Kirie (paper-cut art), which is one of Japan’s traditional forms of “Play,” can be enjoyed by people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds —all you need are paper and scissors.
While appearing to be separate, the elements remain connected as one and emerge as a new form, a unified composition symbolizing the Japan Pavilion’s theme, “Play and Connect, Together.”
This logo gives visual form to that idea of “Play” at the Japan Pavilion, which is envisioned as is understood as a means to gently transcend divisions and connect people.
4. Creator of the Logo and Symbol
Creator’s Profile
Kobayashi Ikki (graphic designer)
After graduating from the Department of Graphic Design, Tama Art University, he worked for Shiseido Company, Limited before establishing his own studio. He currently serves as a part-time lecturer at Joshibi University of Art and Design and Tama Art University.
Creator’s Comment
Folding origami paper and cutting it to create floral designs allows our hands to communicate with others, transcending language barriers—all we need is a piece of paper. And when we unfold that small, folded piece of paper, we can share a small moment of wonder together.
Everyone is allowed to be different. I am free to be myself.
I hope Kirie serves as an opportunity for everyone to become friends.
As was the case with Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, where young architects participated in the design of on-site facilities, international expositions have historically provided platforms for young creators to showcase their creativity and innovative thinking to a global audience. This tradition continues with the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2027 Belgrade, where the pavilion's logo and symbol, designed by promising graphic designer Kobayashi Ikki, were selected through a limited design competition.
Note: Application for permission is required for the use of the logo and symbol.
