Sixth Japan-Australia Ministerial Economic Dialogue Held

On Tuesday, May 19, Mr. Akazawa Ryosei, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, met with Senator the Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism of Australia, at the Sixth Japan-Australia Ministerial Economic Dialogue. They discussed further strengthening of Japan-Australia economic relations based on the Japan-Australia Summit held on Monday, May 4. Following the meeting, they issued a joint statement as one of the outcomes of the ministerial dialogue.

The Japan-Australia Ministerial Economic Dialogue is a minister-level policy forum established between Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to address strategic economic issues between the two countries.

During the ministerial dialogue, the participants reviewed the outcomes of the Japan–Australia Summit held in Canberra, Australia, on Monday, May 4, which marked the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Japan and Australia. These outcomes included the Japan–Australia Joint Declaration on Economic Security Cooperation, the Japan–Australia Joint Statement on Energy Security Cooperation, and the Japan–Australia Joint Statement on Elevated Critical Minerals Cooperation. The ministers also discussed issues such as trade, supply chain cooperation, critical minerals, and energy.

In addition, the ministers discussed regional energy security and the stable supply of energy and resources under the Partnership On Wide Energy and Resources Resilience (POWERR) Asia initiative together with Australia, Japan’s special strategic partner. Following the dialogue, a joint statement was issued as an outcome of the ministerial meeting.
