First Meeting of the Japan-Italy Economic Security Consultations Held in Tokyo

May 27, 2026

On Wednesday, May 27, the first meeting of the Japan-Italy Economic Security Consultations took place in Tokyo. This meeting was held following the Japan-Italy summit meeting held in Tokyo in January of this year, where the two leaders concurred on further strengthening cooperation in the field of economic security.

On the Japanese side, Mr. MATSUO Takehiko, Vice-Minister for International Affairs of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. AKAHORI Takeshi, Senior Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, co-chaired the meeting.

The Italian side was co-chaired by Mr. Valentino VALENTINI, Vice-Minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, and Mr. Carlo LO CASCIO, Deputy Secretary-General for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Both sides exchanged views on key issues related to economic security, such as the resilience of supply chains including those for critical minerals, addressing economic coercion and non-market policies and practices, as well as promoting industrial cooperation. Both sides concurred that further enhancing cooperation on these issues was necessary.
