Statement by Minister Hagiuda on the Strategic Energy Plan

October 22, 2021

Subject : Cabinet Decision on the Strategic Energy Plan

  1. Having been deliberated on since last October, the Strategic Energy Plan was approved in a Cabinet meeting today.

  2. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. We believe that it is a prerequisite for energy policy to make steady progress in the reconstruction of Fukushima and to give the top priority to safety over all other factors.

  3. In addition, we have formulated this Strategic Energy Plan with two important perspectives.

The first is to show approaches to energy policy toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 as announced last October and the GHG emission reduction targets for FY2030 announced this April.

The second is to present initiatives to ensure stable supply and realize low cost energy supply on the major premise of safety, in order to overcome challenges Japan's energy supply and demand structure face while taking actions against climate change.

  4. We will make all-out efforts toward implementing energy policy based on this Strategic Plan, working with relevant government offices.
