Press Conference Room, METI
US import restriction measures on steel, etc.
Q: China announced yesterday that it will impose high tariffs on imports from the United States as a retaliation. Do you have any comments?
I guess trade issues will be discussed at the summit meeting with the United States. Do you think the Chinese reaction will have any impact on the talks?
A: I am aware that the Chinese government started to impose high tariffs on 128 items of US made products responding to the US import restrictions measures on steel and aluminum.
Japan has stated that the problem is global excess production of steel and aluminum and it is not in anyone's interest to retaliate against each other. I would like to continue talking to related countries. From the standpoint of a strong supporter of free trade, I would like to encourage related countries to solve the problem in accordance with the WTO rules.
As for the agendas and achievements of the Prime Minister’s visit to the US, I cannot make any comments at this moment.
