Japan-US trade issues
Q: As for the Japan-US Summit Meeting next week, what kind of achievements or progress do you expect from among various trade issues between the two countries?
Is Mr. Yanase, the Vice-Minister for International Affairs of METI, going to accompany the Prime Minister Mr. Abe?
It is reported that the US President Mr. Trump told his economic chiefs to consider the possibility of rejoining the TPP. Do you have any comments on this?
A: At the Summit Meeting next week, of course, bilateral economic issues will most likely be discussed, but as this is a highly diplomatic exchange I would like to refrain from making any predictive comments on the specific policies or expected results.
As for the delegation members, generally speaking, if economic issues are to be added to the agenda, the Vice-Minister for International Affairs of METI will accompany Prime Minister Abe.
As for President Trump’s remarks on the TPP, I know that some members of congress from agricultural states who had attended a meeting with the President released a statement to that effect, but no clear details related to the President’s remarks have been released to this point. I would first like to confirm related facts including the purpose and intention behind his remarks.
