Question-and-Answer Session

Lawsuits filed by Japanese companies regarding U.S. tariff policy

Q: I have a question about the Trump administration’s tariff policy. It has been revealed that multiple Japanese companies have filed lawsuits against the U.S. administration seeking refunds of additional tariffs. How do you view this development, and if the U.S. Supreme Court rules the tariffs unconstitutional, how does the Government of Japan plan to respond to both the Government of the United States and Japanese companies?

A: We are aware of the developments regarding the lawsuits you mentioned concerning U.S. tariff measures, but as these cases are currently under litigation, we would like to refrain from commenting on them. Furthermore, since the Supreme Court has not yet issued a ruling on reciprocal tariffs, we would also like to refrain from answering hypothetical questions at this point. We will continue to closely monitor related developments, thoroughly assess their impact, and respond appropriately.

Introduction of Japanese small cars in the United States

Q: At the press conference on December 3, President Trump praised Japan’s small and cute cars and explained that he had instructed the Department of Transportation to introduce them in the United States. Transportation Secretary Duffy, who attended the press conference, also stated that if Toyota or other companies want to produce small, affordable, and fuel-efficient cars, an environment has been established for them to manufacture and sell such cars in the United States. First, could you please confirm whether there has been any communication or consultation between Japan and the United States on this matter? Then, could you also share your view and how the Government of Japan plans to promote the manufacturing and sale of small cars and kei cars in the United States?

A: We are aware of the remarks you mentioned, but we have not held consultations with the U.S. side on this matter. We are not aware of the intent or details of these statements. Japanese automakers produce about 3.3 million vehicles annually in the United States and have invested over 60 billion dollars cumulatively, contributing significantly to the U.S. economy and society, including job creation. It is important that vehicles produced by Japanese manufacturers in the United States are accepted by consumers and become widespread in a way that benefits both Japan and the United States. We intend to continue closely monitoring U.S. policy developments.
