METI co-hosted the Conference on Critical Materials and Minerals with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The conference was attended by government officials, experts, and companies from eight countries and one international organization, namely Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Italian Republic, the Commonwealth of Australia, Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Republic, and the European Commission. Participants exchanged information and discussed cooperation on policies, research and development, and other matters related to critical minerals and permanent magnets.

On Wednesday, June 10, Mr. INO Toshiro, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, delivered the opening remarks as a representative of the Government of Japan, which served as this year’s chair.

*The Conference on Critical Materials and Minerals has been held since 2011 in response to the sharp rise in prices of critical materials, particularly rare earth elements, in 2010, with the aim of promoting discussions on trilateral cooperation among Japan, the United States, and Europe. The conference is currently held on a regular basis as part of cooperation among eight countries and one international organization, namely Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, and the European Commission, to exchange information and discuss cooperation on policies, research and development, and other areas related to critical materials.
