Key findings of the survey

  • In FY 1999 the number of foreign affiliates newly established increased for the first time in three years. The number increased especially in the manufacturing sector. In terms of size of capital, enterprises with size of capital of 10 million yen or less are the most, and capital per enterprise widely increased, reflecting the increase of enterprises with size of capital over a billion. Most of the newly established are 100%-owned subsidiaries. In addition, the number of foreign affiliates withdrawn also increased, and one-fourth of them are by affiliations with foreign investors, restructuring of business, etc.
  • In 1999, sales of foreign affiliates increased, and their current profit also increased for the first time in four years.
