Moving Overseas with Your Pet listed on CITES Appendices

In the case in which you are a person leaving Japan for the purpose of permanent residence* with a pet listed on the CITES Appendices, in accordance with Japanese domestic law and CITES Article7 (3), acquisition of a CITES certificate is unnecessary for international movement of pets accompanying an individual who is moving.

It is issued only when required by the destination country. Firstly, please make sure in advance whether the destination country of your exports provides any exemptions corresponding to those in Japan. If no such exemption is provided in the destination country, we will issue a CITES export permit.
It takes time to issue certificates. Please apply with a margin of one month or more.

Representative CITES listed animals:  Turtles, Tortoises, Iguanas, Parrots, Axolotls, etc. (Domesticated dogs, cats etc. are not listed by CITES)
For species listed in CITES, you can check a following web site with the Latin / scientific name of your pet.

Notes:
*The term “person leaving Japan for the purpose of permanent residence” shall refer to those who plan to stay in the destination country for one or more years when accompanying his/her family members or for two or more years in the case of any other situation.
