The 56th Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the 14th Session of Working Group III (WGIII) were held online from March 21, 2022 (Mon.) to April 4 (Mon.). The Summary for Policymakers (SPM) from the WGIII contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) (hereinafter referred to as the "WGIII AR6 Report") was approved, and the main body of the contribution and related items were accepted.

1. Background

The 56th Session of the IPCC and the 14th Session of WGIII were held online from March 21, 2022 (Mon.) to April 4 (Mon.). The SPM of the WGIII AR6 Report was approved, and the main report and its attachments were accepted for the first time in 8 years since the WGIII contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) in 2014.

The IPCC released the SPM for the contribution on April 4 (Mon.) at midnight (JST). The IPCC plans to release the main report and related documents around August of 2022, after editing it based on discussions at the Session.

More than 400 people, including delegates from the national governments and representatives of international organizations, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat; a total of 20 people from Japan, including those from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Japan Meteorological Agency, and the Ministry of the Environment.

For the creation of this report, the related ministries and agencies in Japan organized a domestic liaison group to work with the IPCC to support the report-related activities. 17 Japanese scientists are named in the list of its authors. The government has also proactively contributed to reviewing the report and discussions at the Sessions.

2. Future schedule

The Japanese government will translate the approved SPM of the WGIII AR6 Report into Japanese and publish the translation on the METI website in a month.
IPCC plans to approve the AR6 Synthesis Report at the 57th Session this September.
