IPCC Symposium "Learning the Latest Findings on Climate Change Mitigation from Sixth Assessment Report of the IPCC" to be Held

May 2, 2022

On May 19, 2022 (Thur.), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold an IPCC Symposium. Professor Jim Skea, Co-chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), who was responsible for compiling the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report released on April 4, and other writers in Japan will give lectures on the contribution. Experts in various fields of energy, industry, and finance have also been invited to hold a panel discussion. We look forward to greeting many participants interested in the IPCC's activities and in learning scientific knowledge on climate change mitigation.

3. Main details of the symposium

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) serves as the source of the latest scientific knowledge on climate change. It released the Working Group III (WGIII) contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), its latest report on climate change mitigation, in April of this year. The report follows the Working Group I (WGI) contribution released last August (The Physical Science Basis) and the Working Group II (WGII) contribution released in February of this year (Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability), and provides a comprehensive assessment on climate change mitigation based on the latest scientific knowledge. The purpose of this IPCC symposium is to give an overview of the AR6 WGIII Report, and to spread the latest knowledge on climate change mitigation.

For this symposium, Professor Jim Skea, Co-chair of WGIII of the IPCC, who was responsible for compiling the contribution, has been invited from the UK to give a lecture on the message to civil society and the future of climate change described in the Assessment Report. There will be lectures by two of the Japanese writers who worked on the contribution, Akimoto Keigo (RITE, main author of chapter 17 of the SPM, "Accelerating the Transition in the Context of Sustainable Development") and Morita Kanako (Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, main author of chapter 15, "Investment and Finance"). In addition, experts in various fields of energy, industry, and finance have been invited to hold a panel discussion titled "How to Tackle Global Mitigation in the Near-, Med-, and Long-Terms Based on the Sixth Assessment Report of the IPCC."

We look forward to greeting many participants interested in the IPCC Assessment Report and climate change mitigation.
