First Certification Body Registered for the JIS Mark System for Electromagnetic Records Such as Software and Data

May 12, 2022

On May 12, 2022, the Director-General of the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry accredited the Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA) as the first certification body for the JIS mark system for electromagnetic records such as software and data. The reliability of software and data is expected to improve as software companies get certified by the JQA and display a JIS mark.

1. Overview

The JIS mark system enables businesses to get certified by private third-party organizations that have been accredited by the government (accredited certification bodies), then display a JIS mark on their products and elsewhere to show that they conform to the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS).

Until now, the JIS mark system has only covered industrial products and the technology used to process them. However, a revision of the Industrial Standardization Act (brought into force in July 2019) means that it now covers electromagnetic records such as software and data as well.

The Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA) submitted an application to the Director-General of the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry for certification regarding JIS X25051 in relation to electromagnetic records. After examining its application, the bureau accredited it on May 12, 2022 as the first certification body for electromagnetic records.

3. Expected effects

The JQA is going to begin work related to certifying RUSP with a JIS mark. Getting certified by the JQA will enable companies that create RUSP to display a JIS mark on related documents and other items to show that they conform to the quality standards specified by the JIS. This will in turn help improve the reliability of RUSP.
