Results of the 2021 Economic Census for Business Activity (Preliminary Report) Compiled

In June 2021, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) conducted the Economic Census for Business Activity, a statistical survey of all establishments and businesses in Japan, with the aim of comprehensively ascertaining accounting matters such as the sales (revenue) and costs of all Japan's industry sectors at the same point in time. METI has now compiled a preliminary report of the results.
1. Outline of the Economic Census for Business Activity
The Economic Census for Business Activity is a survey of all establishments and businesses in Japan conducted with the aim of clarifying both nationwide and region-by-region the situation of economic activity in Japan as a whole. This year marks its third time (the first and second having been in 2012 and 2016, respectively).
2. Overview
(1) Situation of sales (revenue) and net value added
In 2020, Japan's sales (revenue) were 1,702.0201 trillion yen, and its net value added was 337.1437 trillion yen.Looking at net value added, for example, "medical care and welfare" had the highest percentage at 21.1% of all industries, followed by "manufacturing" at 19.3%, then "wholesale and retail" at 14.4%. In addition, the tertiary industries accounted for 73.2% of all industries.
(2) Situation of numbers of establishments and employees
As of June 1, 2021, there were 50.79 million private-sector establishments, and 57.458 million employees.Looking at the numbers of employees, for example, "wholesale and retail" had the highest percentage at 20.0% of all industries, followed by "manufacturing" at 15.4%, then "medical care and welfare" at 14.2%. In addition, the tertiary industries accounted for 77.2% of all industries.
3. Plans for future releases
(1) Aggregated results related to the manufacturing industries
METI plans to release the aggregated results for the manufacturing industries in September 2022, covering data such as numbers of establishments, value of manufactured goods shipped, and net value added, and including breakdowns by industry type (24 broad classifications), by employment scale, and by prefecture.
It also plans to release more detailed aggregated results in December 2022, including further breakdowns by industry type (546 subclassifications), and ones by item (approximately 1,800 items), prefecture, and municipality.
(2) Aggregated results for other industries
Starting in December 2022, METI plans to sequentially release detailed aggregated results for each industry (e.g., "mining" and "wholesale and retail"), including breakdowns by industry type and region for sales, numbers of employees, and industry-specific characteristics (e.g., "sales floor area" for "wholesale and retail").
