However, the economic and geographical circumstances of each country are different, and in order to promote effective emissions mitigation, it is essential to accelerate the transitions of each country based on their diverse circumstances, by utilizing a wide range of technologies and energy sources, rather than adopting a uniform approach. In addition to transitioning through various pathways, we must create innovations that are not simple extensions of conventional technologies and engage with developing countries to realize decarbonization.
In this regard, we will hold the "Tokyo GX Week" inviting ministers and world leaders in various fields, with the aim of realizing GX (Green Transformation), which will shift the economic, social, and industrial structure that have depended on fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution, to structures driven by clean energy, and drive economic growth and development through emissions mitigation.
(1) Second Asia Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting
Date:
September 26 (Mon.)
Venue:
Hotel New Otani (Hybrid)
Outline:
In order to simultaneously achieve economic growth and carbon neutrality in emerging countries in Asia and elsewhere, we need diverse and realistic energy transitions that take each country's circumstances into account and that utilize every possible energy source and technology. In line with this idea, attendees from participating countries will hold further deliberations taking note of discussions at the AGGPM Public-Private Forum in April. We plan to share our discussions with the international community with a view toward fora such as the G20 and COP27.
(2) Fourth International Conference on Carbon Recycling
Date:
September 26 (Mon.)
Venue:
Online (the event will also be livestreamed.) and othersCo-organizer:
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
Outline: This conference will include information about Japan's progress on its carbon recycling efforts—a key technology in achieving worldwide carbon neutrality—and an intensive discussion that will bring together global wisdom from the industrial, academic, and governmental spheres to convene on issues that arise when implementing this technology throughout society. It will be timed to coincide with the opening of the Carbon Recycling R&D and demonstration base in Osakikamijima, Hiroshima. Our goal is for this to further strengthen international cooperation.
(3) Fifth Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting
Date:
September 26 (Mon.)
Venue:
Hotel New Otani (Hybrid)
Co-organizer:
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
Outline:
The first ever Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting was held in Japan in 2018 as a platform for promoting hydrogen usage on a global scale and for concerned countries to coordinate and work together. This year marks its fifth meeting. This fifth meeting, based on current energy circumstances, will focus on addressing energy security, the encouraging national- and regional-level involvement in taking part in hydrogen-related efforts, and how support should be provided in order to drive hydrogen usage.
(4) Second International Conference on Fuel Ammonia
Date:
September 28 (Wed.)
Venue:
Online (Streaming tentative)
Co-organizer:
Clean Fuel Ammonia Association (CFAA)
Outline:
In order to establish stable, low-cost and flexible supply chains and markets for fuel ammonia as zero-emission fuel, the International Conference on Fuel Ammonia will be held with related countries, companies and organizations to build a foundation for international collaboration among concerned parties that transcends national boundaries. At the conference, we will deepen discussions with potential supplier countries such as Saudi Arabia about the direction of actions to enhance international recognition of fuel ammonia and expand its supply and demand.(5) 11th LNG Producer-Consumer Conference
Date:
September 29 (Thur.)
Place:
Online (Live streaming will be available.)
Co-organizer:
Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC)
Outline:
The LNG Producer-Consumer Conference is the world's largest LNG-related international conference, where producer and consumer countries gather to discuss the development of the global LNG market. This year's conference is its 11th year. It will focus on LNG, which is attracting increasing attention not only as a response to climate change but also from the perspective of stable energy supply amid the drastically changing international energy situation, and will deepen discussions on future market prospects and the measures required of the public and private sectors.
(6) Second Asia CCUS Network Forum
Date:
September 30 (Fri.)
Venue:
Tokyo Prince Hotel (Hybrid)
Co-organizer:
Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia
Outline:
The Asia CCUS Network was launched in June last year as an international industry-academia-government platform to share knowledge and develop a business environment for the utilization of CCUS (Carbon dioxide Capture, Utilization, and Storage) throughout Asia. In this second forum, we will review the progress made over the past year and advance toward the creation of common rules to ensure stable CCUS projects within an Asia-wide CCUS network through panel discussions among participating countries.
(7) Fourth TCFD Summit
Date:
October 5 (Wed.)
Venue:
Tokyo Midtown Hall (Hybrid)
Co-organizers:
TCFD Consortium, The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)
Meeting website link: URL
Outline:
As financial institutions become increasingly important in pushing for stronger climate change countermeasures, there is a growing international tendency to make disclosure of climate-related financial information compulsory for companies. This is the goal of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), established per the G20's request for a framework for such disclosures.
At this year's TCFD Summit, industry and financial leaders will discuss what disclosures should look like in order to ensure that investors can properly appraise transition and innovation efforts—an important part of improving the quality of disclosures and achieving carbon neutrality based on shared international rules—and ensure that said disclosures will encourage financing. Participants will also speed up the flow of financing to help companies achieve carbon neutrality.
(8) Ninth ICEF
Date:
October 5 (Wed.) and 6 (Thur.)
Place:
Chinzanso (Hybrid)
Co-organizer:
New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
Meeting website link: URL
Outline: With a focus on the actions that we can take to create innovation faster, this meeting will deepen discussions among stakeholders (entities from various countries/regions and technology experts) who share in the understanding that diversification is the origin of innovation. Japan will introduce not only energy supply and demand but also carbon dioxide removal technologies and critical minerals into the discussion, and we will announce the results of our innovation and actions.(9) Fourth RD20 (Leaders' Session)
Date:
October 6 (Thu.)
Venue:
Tokyo Prince Hotel (Hybrid)
Organizer:
The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology
Meeting website link: URL
Outline:
This session will gather the leaders of G20 research institutions in the clean energy field to discuss strengthening alliances between different countries' research institutions and expanding international research and development. Its aim is to forge a path to creating the innovations that will achieve carbon neutrality. At the Leaders' Session, leaders from research institutes will have a high-level discussion on global-scale cooperation toward a low-carbon society. They also hope to construct a year-round system of initiatives as a way to actualize further activities.
(10) First Global Green Transformation Conference (GGX)
Date:
October 7 (Fri.)
Place:
Iino Hall (Hybrid)
Outline:
To globally realize Green Transformation, we will newly host the Global GX Conference and deepen our discussion in challenging issues such as green market design, green product standards and criteria, and trade rules, in collaboration with other related initiatives.
