Embedded Formwork Using Concrete Made with Fixated CO2 Achieving Negative Costs to Undergo Trial Construction at Construction Site Managed by MLIT

- Implementation of on-site trial construction using results of the Green Innovation Fund -

September 6, 2022

Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) will collaborate to implement a trial construction project at a site directly managed by MLIT with the aim of demonstrating the use of a concrete developed by the Green Innovation Fund project that uses CO2 in its formation.

1. Overview

Toward the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, a Green Innovation Fund has been established to support companies that are taking on ambitious challenges. As one of its support targets, the "Development of Technology for Producing Concrete and Cement Using CO2" project was formed, and research has been conducted into the development of concrete with CO2 emission reductions and fixation volumes maximized, and the development of technology for controlling its quality and evaluating fixation volumes.
METI, NEDO, and MLIT will collaborate to carry out a trial construction project at a site directly managed by MLIT with the aim of demonstrating the use of a concrete developed by the Green Innovation Fund project that uses CO2 in its formation. A date for on-site news coverage of the construction has been announced as below.
In the future, the ministries will encourage further research and development of concrete with CO2 emission reductions and fixation volumes maximized by using the results of this trial as feedback into R&D, and work to make construction sites carbon neutral by publicly implementing the concrete that is being developed.

2. Overview of the Development of Technology for Producing Concrete and Cement Using CO2 Project

R&D items:

  1. Development of concrete with CO2 emission reductions and fixation volumes maximized
  2. Development of technology for controlling quality and evaluating fixation volumes of concrete with CO2 emission reductions and fixation volumes maximized

Main contractors in charge of carrying out the trial construction project:

Kajima Corporation, Denka Company Limited, and Takenaka Corporation

Results of R&D:

Demonstrating the performance of carbon-negative concrete that is newly developed based on existing knowledge and produced with captured and fixated CO2.

3. Overview of the directly managed construction

Trial construction:

FY2021-2022 Maintenance work on the new Kusaka River drainage channel management road

Trial site:

Okina, Hidaka Village, Takaoka County, Kochi Prefecture

Construction contractor:

Kajima Corporation

Content of the trial:

Within a work tunnel for the construction of the drainage channel tunnel, part of the side wall will be built with embedded formwork that uses concrete made with fixated CO2 achieving negative costs.

Note: Embedded formwork is formwork that becomes part of the structure instead of being removed after the concrete is poured.
Note: On-site news coverage of the materials used for the trial construction and how the work is done will be permitted on September 9 (Fri.), 2022, at 11:00 for about one hour.
(Please check the related materials for details. For those who wish to cover the construction, please check the press release from MLIT.)
