Japan-Indonesia Policy Dialogue on Smart Industrial Safety Held

On September 28, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia held a policy dialogue on smart industrial safety. In addition, METI held a seminar on smart industrial safety for Indonesian companies and other parties from the viewpoint of improving their abilities in the field of smart industrial safety. The ministry's delegation also visited a petrochemical company in Indonesia and exchanged views.

1. Japan-Indonesia Policy Dialogue

On September 28, Mr. Sasaji Ken, Deputy Director-General for Industrial and Product Safety, METI, visited Indonesia and held the Policy Dialogue on Smart Industrial Safety with Mr. Ignatius Warsito, Director-General of the Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Textile Industryof the Ministry of Industry of Indonesia.

This policy dialogue is based on the director-general-level Memorandum of Cooperation in the Field of Smart Industrial Safety* between Japan and Indonesia, and marks the Deputy Director-General's first visit to Indonesia.

At the policy dialogue, there were explanations of the latest smart industrial safety measures from both countries and an exchange of views regarding the use of smart industrial safety technologies in various industrial sectors between the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and other ministries.

The two sides reaffirmed that they will continue cooperation between Japan and Indonesia to exchange information on technology and policy trends in the field of smart industrial safety.

Note: Signed at the director-general level between the governments of Japan and Indonesia in January 2022 with the aim of increasing the safety and effectiveness of chemical plants and other facilities in Indonesia through the use of AI, IoT, and other technologies.

2. Seminars on Smart Industrial Safety

On September 29, METI held a seminar on smart industrial safety for Indonesian companies and other parties from the viewpoint of improving their abilities in the field of smart industrial safety. The seminar included lectures by five experts from Japan: Professor Yamashita Yoshiyuki of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and representatives from Chiyoda Corporation, JGC Corporation, Mitsui Chemicals, and NEC Corporation. From Indonesia, many representatives from petrochemical and manufacturing industries, universities, associations, governments, and other organizations participated.

3. Visit to an Indonesian company and exchange of views

On September 30, METI's delegation visited the major Indonesian petrochemical company Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk PT, and exchanged views with experts on plant safety management, the use of digital technology, and other topics.
