Results of the 2021 Economic Census for Business Activity Compiled: Cross-Industry Aggregates for a Breakdown of Construction and Service Revenues (Secondary Aggregation), and Aggregates by Industry for Wholesale and Retail Trade and Service Industries

On June 1, 2021, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) conducted the Economic Census for Business Activity, a statistical survey of all establishments and businesses in Japan, with the aim of comprehensively ascertaining accounting matters such as the sales (revenues) and costs of all Japan’s industry sectors at the same point in time. METI has now compiled the results of the aggregates by industry and cross-industry aggregates.

The results of this survey are expected to be used in a variety of ways in the future as important basic data for clearly seeing the actual conditions of each of Japan's industries.

1. The Economic Census for Business Activity

The Economic Census for Business Activity is a survey of all establishments and businesses in Japan conducted with the aim of clarifying both nationwide and region-by-region the situation of economic activity in establishments and businesses in all industries and fields in Japan and obtaining information on the population that will contribute to improving the accuracy of each statistical survey targeting all establishments and businesses. This survey was the third one, with the first and second conducted in 2012 and 2016 respectively.

2. Summary of the survey results

(1) Results for cross-industry aggregates for a breakdown of construction and service revenues (secondary aggregation)

Looking at construction and service revenues by large category, medical, health care and welfare had the highest revenue, at 166.4487 trillion yen, followed by finance and insurance with revenue of 117.706 trillion yen, and construction with 112.6175 trillion yen.
 
Looking at the percentages of construction and service revenues by middle category, social insurance, social welfare and care services had the highest percentage in medical, health care and welfare (81.0% of the total revenue of the large category), insurance institutions, including insurance agents, brokers and services had the highest percentage in finance and insurance (60.4% of the same), and general construction had the highest percentage in construction (63.5% of the same).

(2) Results for aggregates by industry for wholesale and retail trade

Total annual sales of products in 2020 were 522.6485 trillion yen. Out of the sales, those in the wholesale trade were 389.3883 trillion yen, and looking at the industry by industry subcategory, sales in wholesale trade of food and beverages accounted for the largest share at 50.2359 trillion yen. Sales in retail trade were 133.2575 trillion yen, and looking at the industry by industry subcategory, sales in grocery stores accounted for the largest share at 22.9651 trillion yen.

(3) Results for aggregates by industry for the service industries

A breakdown of the total sales (revenues) in this industry in 2020 is as follows: real estate and goods rental and leasing: 55.378 trillion yen; scientific research, professional and technical services: 46.3668 trillion yen; accommodation, eating and drinking services: 18.9824 trillion yen; living-related and personal services and amusement services: 29.7551 trillion yen; education, learning support (*1): 3.5769 trillion yen; and services, n.e.c. (*2): 41.4390 trillion yen.

3. Plans for future releases

METI plans to release the following results of the cross-industry aggregates in June 2023.
