In the fall of 2023, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will integrally host the following nine conferences, which are collectively called Tokyo GX Week.
(1) Tokyo GX Week Plenary Session: September 25
(2) Third Asia Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting: September 25
(3) Sixth Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting: September 25
(4) Third Asia CCUS Network Forum: September 27
(5) Fifth International Conference on Carbon Recycling: September 27
(6) Third International Conference on Fuel Ammonia: September 29
(7) Global Green Transformation Conference (GGX) x Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Summit: October 2
(8) Tenth Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF): October 4 and 5
(9) Fifth Research and Development 20 for Clean Energy Technologies (RD20) (Leaders Session): October 5
The current unprecedented energy crisis requires global society to achieve three goals at the same time, namely energy security and measures against climate change, both of which need to be finely balanced, and advancement of economic growth. To achieve these goals, it is important for each country to conduct efforts to promote GX (Green Transformation), including innovation, policies, and framework building, and to work toward a common goal, i.e., net zero emissions, in accordance with a variety of approaches that meet their respective energy situations and other circumstances.
In light of this, METI decided to hold Tokyo GX Week, following on from 2022, with the aim of realizing GX for a shift to economies, societies, and industrial structures centered on clean energy, and connecting the results to decarbonization and the growth and development of the economy.
(1) Tokyo GX Week Plenary Session: September 25
Venue
Hotel New Otani
Outline
Following the convening of the G7 Hiroshima Summit 2023 hosted by Japan, Japan will convey to the entire world its efforts and stance for ideal approaches to innovation that aims at and will enable the achievement of three goals: [i] energy security, [ii] decarbonization, and [iii] economic growth.
(2) Third Asia Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting: September 25
Venue
Hotel New Otani
Outline
Achievement of economic growth and carbon neutrality at the same time in emerging countries in Asia and other regions requires a realistic energy transition with a variety of pathways in which the situations in each country are considered with all energy resources and technologies utilized. The viewpoint of energy security is another factor which must be taken into consideration. This meeting will hold discussions on these thoughts with participating countries in Asia and the Middle East, and also convey information to global society.
(3) Sixth Hydrogen Energy Ministerial Meeting: September 25
Venue
Hotel New Otani
Outline
This meeting will hold sessions exclusively for hydrogen policies, aiming to facilitate international cooperation to expand supply and demand in the field of hydrogen and hold discussions on challenges in the use of hydrogen that participating countries should take on in a collaborative manner. In parallel with this, it will conduct follow-ups and other efforts under the Tokyo Statement and the Global Action Agenda.
(4) Third Asia CCUS Network Forum: September 27
Venue
Hilton Hiroshima (Hiroshima City)
Outline
The public, industry, and academic sectors of participating countries will exchange views on the sharing of knowledge and the development of business environments to make use of carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies throughout Asia, the region that is expected to hold potential for the large-scale storage of carbon dioxide. This forum, the third one this year, will hold discussions on the commencement of a pilot project for carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technologies, based on the current development state of these technologies, as an effort for the commercialization of CCS/CCU business in ASEAN economies. The forum will be held in a nonmetropolitan area for the first time and will hold a networking event with regional businesses.
(5) Fifth International Conference on Carbon Recycling: September 27
Venue
Hilton Hiroshima (Hiroshima City)
Outline
The conference, focusing on Carbon Recycling, a key technology to realize carbon neutrality, will confirm that participating countries will make efforts for taking on the development and demonstration of related technologies for their social implementation in the future. It will also hold discussions aiming to fortify cooperative ties between participating countries. In response to the release of the Carbon Recycling Roadmap in June 2023, the conference will exchange views on the role of Carbon Recycling in achieving carbon neutrality, ideal approaches to collaboration between industries, between regions, and between countries, and other issues. Japan will convey its regional efforts by taking advantage of the first convening of the forum in a nonmetropolitan area.
(6) Third International Conference on Fuel Ammonia: September 29
Venue
Hitotsubashi Hall, Hitotsubashi University
Outline
This conference will focus on the establishment of stable, inexpensive, and flexible ammonia supply chains and markets. Toward this goal, it will share the strategies, efforts, and endeavors of the public and private sectors, while reviewing the steady raising of awareness regarding ammonia in the international arena, such as G7 meetings. In addition, participants will exchange opinions and hold discussions.
(7) GGX x TCFD Summit: October 2
Venue
The Capitol Hotel Tokyu
Outline
This summit will focus on the further development of discussions on transition financing, contributions to emission reduction, decarbonization in industry, and other efforts. Toward this goal, it will hold discussions to execute leadership in making international rules for facilitating mutual collaboration among the public, private, and financial sectors and to strike a balance between emission reduction and economic growth under their respective frameworks.
(8) Tenth ICEF: October 4 and 5
