METI Minister Nishimura Signs a Joint Statement on Cooperation on Improving Investment Environment and Economic Relationship, and Attends the Signing of the Japan-Angola Investment Agreement

On August 9 (Thur.), Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, signed the Joint Statement on Cooperation on Improving Investment Environment and Economic Relationship, and attended the Signing of the Japan-Angola Investment Agreement, during his visit to the Republic of Angola.
1. Signing of the Joint Statement on Cooperation on Improving Investment Environment and Economic Relationship
On August 9 (Thur.), Minister Nishimura met with H. E. Dr. Mário Augusto Caetano João, the Minister of Economy and Planning of the Republic of Angola, during his visit to the country, and signed the Joint Statement on Cooperation on Improving Investment Environment and Economic Relationship.
The signed document welcomes, in addition to existing cooperation in the field of infrastructure development, enhanced cooperation for promoting bilateral economic and business activities through the exchange of relevant information and other related cooperative activities. In this it gives consideration to the willingness expressed by Japanese start-ups to engage in business activities utilizing digital technology and innovation in Angola. In addition, to stimulate further cooperation between companies in both countries, the parties agreed to seek potential collaboration among the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and relevant ministries and organizations of the Republic of Angola, in the following areas:
(a) Supporting trade and investment between Angola and Japan;
(b) Supporting collaboration between Angolan and Japanese business sectors, including the dispatching of business missions;
(c) Supporting human resources development that contributes to Angola’s industrialization; and
(d) Improving the business environments in both Angola and Japan.
The signing of this arrangement will be an opportunity for METI to engage in the promotion of trade and investment.
2. Attending the Signing of the Japan-Angola Investment Agreement
On August 9 (Thur.), Minister Nishimura attended the signing of the “Agreement between Japan and the Republic of Angola for the Liberalisation, Promotion and Protection of Investment (Japan-Angola Investment Agreement), together with H.E. Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, during his visit to the country. The signing of this agreement ensures liberal and stable business activities by companies who enter the market of Angola from Japan, and the expansion of investment and the further development of the economic relationship between both countries can be expected.
The Japan-Angola Investment Agreement is the sixth investment treaty in Africa, following agreements with Morocco (2022), Côte d'Ivoire (2021), Kenya (2017), Mozambique (2014), and Egypt (1978) (parenthesized figures shows the year in which the agreement entered into force).
