Minister Nishimura Visits the United Kingdom

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, Mr. Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the United Kingdom. He held a ministerial dialogue, had a meeting with a related minister, witnessed the conclusion of memorandums, and delivered a speech at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
1. The Japan-UK Strategic Economic Policy and Trade Dialogue
The two sides agreed to make economic security the axis of their cooperation and to focus on advancing cooperation in the fields of trade, energy including nuclear power, and innovation. Following the dialogue, they signed a joint statement. In addition, Minister Nishimura expressed Japan’s appreciation to the U.K. for showing support for discharging ALPS treated water into the sea and shared Japan’s expectations that the U.K. would expand its imports and consumption of foods produced in Japan.


2. Delivering a speech at IISS
Minister Nishimura delivered a speech at IISS. He conveyed the message that Japan and the U.K. will further enrich cooperation to build an international economic order that is free and fair.


3. Meeting with H.E. Ms. Claire Coutinho, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero
The two sides held discussions on the promotion of Japan-U.K. cooperation in the field of nuclear energy and the enhancement of collaboration in clean energy, including offshore wind power generation. In addition, Minister Nishimura expressed Japan’s appreciation to the U.K. for continued support for discharging ALPS treated water into the sea and shared his expectations that the U.K. would expand its imports and consumption of foods produced in Japan.

4. Signing ceremony between the Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI) and the UK Export Finance (UKEF)
In the presence of Minister Nishimura and H.E. Ms. Kemi Badenoch, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, NEXI and UKEF signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance cooperative ties in achieving SDGs in the African and Indo-Pacific regions and addressing priority issues, including the fields of clean energy and renewable energy, and cooperation in third countries.



5. Signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Cooperation on development of High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor
Aiming to facilitate Japan-U.K. cooperation in nuclear energy, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) of the U.K. concluded a Memorandum of Cooperation that shows the future directions of the cooperation involving the project for developing a reactor for the demonstration of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor. Under the MOC, Japan and the U.K. will strive to advance cooperation in research and development aiming at the introduction of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor into both countries as well as in deliberations for constructing a supply chain for nuclear energy and efforts for human resources development.
