Follow up news release regarding situation about splash of cleaning water onto workers at additional ALPS building in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station
October 28, 2023
On October 25, cleaning water was splashed onto workers in the additional ALPS building at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), during the cleaning of pipes used to transfer contaminated water undergoing purification treatment. Two of the five workers involved in the work had been transported to Fukushima Medical University Hospital because they could not have been decontaminated to below the criteria for leaving the controlled area. Those two workers were discharged from the hospital today. There were no physical problems with any of the workers, and no trouble were observed at the skin of the contaminated area.
The October 25th news release stated that "five workers who were cleaning the piping used to transfer contaminated water that was in the process of being purified were splashed with piping cleaning water or mist." but by subsequent clarification of the situation, only four of the five workers had involved in the pipe cleaning work had been found to be physically contaminated. Two of the four workers contaminated have been decontaminated, but the other two have been transported to Fukushima Medical University Hospital because they had not been decontaminated to below the criteria for leaving the controlled area.
