The Small and Medium Enterprise Agency (SMEA) has been conducting the Basic Survey on Small and Medium Enterprises every year as a cross-industry survey in order to ascertain the financial and operational situation of SMEs. SMEA hereby announces that it has compiled a preliminary report on the results of the 2023 survey (performance results are based on the FY2022 closing accounts).
1. Outline of the Basic Survey on Small and Medium Enterprises
SMEA has been conducting the Basic Survey on Small and Medium Enterprises every year as a cross-industry survey in order to ascertain the financial and operational situation of SMEs. The 2023 survey was the 20th annual survey.
The survey covers approximately 110,000 SMEs randomly selected from 11 industries, namely construction; manufacturing; information and communications; transport and postal services; wholesale trade; retail trade; real estate and goods rental and leasing; scientific research, professional and technical services; accommodations, eating and drinking services; living-related and personal services and amusement services; and services (not elsewhere classified).
This report is based on valid responses from 45,723 companies (valid response rate: 41.7%).
2. Key points of the report
- Average total sales per enterprise were 209 million yen, up by 15.9% from the previous year, and total ordinary profits per enterprise were 9.78 million yen, up by 12.4% from the previous year.
- Average added value per incorporated enterprise was 96.71 million yen, up by 9.7% from the previous year.
- The average number of employees per enterprise was 10.0, up by 8.3% from the previous year.
- The percentage of incorporated enterprises that have conducted business investment was 21.9%, down by 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. The percentage of incorporated enterprises that have concluded new leasing contracts was 12.5%, up by 0.7 percentage points from the previous year.
