The 6th Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue Held

On June 4, 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Energy (MOE) of the Kingdom of Thailand held the 6th Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue in Japan. At the policy dialogue, participants exchanged opinions on energy policies of both countries. In addition, both countries welcomed two memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and Letter of Intent (LOI) on cooperation toward carbon neutrality. Moreover, they visited the Komekurayama P2G Demo Site in Yamanashi Prefecture in which a research facility for green hydrogen is located, and they exchanged opinions.
1. Japan-Thailand Energy Policy Dialogue
On June 4, Mr. Kihara Shinichi, Director-General for International Policy on Carbon Neutrality, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan and H.E. Dr. Prasert Sinsukprasert, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Energy, Thailand, held a policy dialogue. This occasion took place based on the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Realization of Energy Partnership between METI and MOE concluded in January 2022.
At the policy dialogue, both countries confirmed cooperation under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) platform and also exchanged opinions on the efforts for decarbonization in the power, industrial, and transportation sectors as well as on the policy measures for promoting investment for decarbonization, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in Thailand.

2. MOUs and LOI on cooperation for achieving carbon neutrality
On the same date, Mr. Kihara and Dr. Prasert welcomed the following two MOUs and LOI.
- MOE, Thailand, and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO): Letter of Intent (LOI) on the Promotion of Innovation and Technological Development in the Fields of Energy Conservation and Alternative Energy (in Japanese)
- The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.: Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Introduce Hydrogen Large Gas Turbine Co-firing Technology (in Japanese)
- EGAT and IHI Corporation: Memorandum of Understanding on the Technical and Economic Feasibility Study for the Manufacturing and Combustion Test of Biomass Pellets
- The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.: Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Introduce Hydrogen Large Gas Turbine Co-firing Technology (in Japanese)
3. Visiting Komekurayama P2G Demo Site
On June 5, participants of the policy dialogue visited the Komekurayama P2G Demo Site in Yamanashi Prefecture and exchanged opinions on the Power-to-Gas(P2G) System, which generate hydrogen by electrolyzing water with renewable power such as solar power, and storage, transport, and use it.
