Minister Saito Receives Courtesy Call from H.E. Dr. Gerd Müller, Director General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Signs Joint Declaration on Cooperation between UNIDO and METI

On Monday, July 8, 2024, Mr. Saito Ken, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, received a courtesy call from H.E. Dr. Gerd Müller, Director General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The two sides signed a joint declaration on cooperation between UNIDO and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), aiming to enhance outcomes to be brought about by the demonstration program in the Global South countries and the project for supporting the recovery of Ukraine to the maximum extent possible. Following this, they exchanged views on the further strengthening of collaboration.

Overview of the meeting

Minister Saito stated that METI will contribute to facilitating investment in and technology transfer to developing countries that show synergy with METI’s policies by leveraging the UNIDO Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform (STePP) project1 and the Africa advisor project undertaken by Japanese companies for supporting investment in Africa. Based on this, Minister Saito and Director General Müller exchanged views on cooperation projects involving the Global South countries and Ukraine, aiming to work out the specifics of the joint declaration that they signed.

Note 1: This project aims to introduce to developing countries Japan’s outstanding technologies that may contribute to these countries’ sustainable development of industries. The term “STePP” is an acronym for “Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform.”
