The 4th Japan-Pacific Island Countries Economic Forum was Held as a Side Event to the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting

On Wednesday, July 17, 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) jointly held the 4th Japan-Pacific Island Countries Economic Forum at Tokyo Prince Hotel. As a representative of METI, Mr. Kozuki Ryosuke, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and as a representative of MOFA, Mr. Komura Masahiro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the meeting, as well as representatives from 66 Japanese companies and organizations.

As a side event related to the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10), the 4th Japan-IPC Economic Forum was held at the Tokyo Prince Hotel. The forum aims to build relationships between the leaders of Pacific Island countries and Japanese companies and to create business opportunities for Japanese companies in the islands.

The forum brought together State Minister Kozuki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Komura, Mr. Nakazawa Katsunori, Executive Vice President, JETRO, as well as the heads and ministers of participating Pacific Island countries and regions. State Minister Kozuki explained METI’s efforts to contribute to solving social challenges faced by the island countries, including climate change, energy, and waste treatment, and his expectations for the forum. JETRO Executive Vice President Mr. Nakazawa introduced Japanese companies that developing their business in the island countries and gave a presentation to the parties participating in the forum.

Representatives of participating island countries and regions delivered speeches about the attractive features of their countries, the priority fields that their countries have been tackling with, including climate change and tourism, and their expectations for Japanese technologies.

Following the end of the forum, a networking event was held between the representatives of participating Japanese companies and the island countries and regions. This event contributed to facilitating the development of human networks between Japanese companies and the island countries.

Moreover, on the same date, JETRO and Investment Fiji concluded a memorandum of cooperation on trade and investment. The two sides confirmed that they will cooperate in sharing information on their policies, regulations, and procedures for trade and investment as well as in dispatching investment missions and holding seminars to promote business exchanges between the two sides.
