Researchers who are leading players in the field of clean energy inside and outside Japan participated in the symposium, and they held discussions on the latest technologies, including photovoltaic power generation, hydrogen, biofuels, and carbon dioxide capture, as well as human resource development, as efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality.

Overview of the symposium

RD20 is an initiative (framework) launched in 2019 under the leadership of Japan to encourage major research institutions in G20 countries and regions to advance international collaboration in research and development toward achieving carbon neutrality.

On Friday, October 11, the RD20 Tokyo Symposium 2024 was held as the first event in Japan prior to the 6th RD20 Conference to be held in India in December 2024.

This symposium was held as part of the Tokyo GX Week, an effort to achieve green transformation (GX) and intensively hold some international conferences related to energy and the environment.

At the beginning of the symposium, Mr. Takeuchi Shinji, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, delivered his remarks. He provided an outline of Japan’s measures for encouraging financing to promote GX as well as of formulating a long-term vision therefor and stated his expectations for the activities under the RD20 framework that facilitate international cooperation toward carbon neutrality.

Following this, researchers who are leading players in the field of clean energy inside and outside Japan, including Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India, and Dr. Yoshino Akira, Director, Global Zero Emission Research Center (GZR), AIST, gave speeches and held discussions on the latest technologies, including photovoltaic power generation, hydrogen, biofuels, and carbon dioxide capture. In addition, from the viewpoint of human resource development, Prof. Dr. Cuk Supriyadi, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Indonesia, which hosted the 2nd RD20 Summer School held in Indonesia in July 2024, made a briefing on the achievements made at the summer school.
