Third Annual Japan-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue Held

On December 12 (Japan time), 2024, the Third Annual Japan-U.S. Energy Security Dialogue was held between Mr. KIHARA Shinichi, Director-General for Energy and Environmental Policy, Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Mr. KATAHIRA Satoshi, Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Mr. KOBAYASHI Izuru, Deputy Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau, MOFA and Mr. Geoffrey R. Pyatt, Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources, U.S. Department of State (DOS).

1. Japan-U.S. governmental session

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the U.S. Department of State reaffirmed our efforts to accelerate decarbonization and spur economic growth, improve industrial competitiveness, and strengthen energy security through the deployment of innovative clean energy technologies and complementary, resilient, and innovative clean energy supply chains through Japan's GX Promotion Act and the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act as well as to maximize the synergy of these efforts.
Japan and the U.S. have agreed to further promote their cooperation in advancing clean energy technologies such as: floating offshore winds; clean hydrogen and derivatives such as ammonia, synthetic fuels, and synthetic methane; carbon capture and storage/carbon recycling; and advanced nuclear reactors, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
In addition, they agreed on the need to cooperate in building diversified and resilient supply chains for mineral resources, ensuring a stable supply of LNG, reducing methane emissions, and promoting clean energy in the Indo-Pacific region.
Both countries also reaffirmed the importance of continued support for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, particularly in the power and energy sectors.

2. Session together with private companies in Japan and the U.S.

In the session with private sector representatives from both countries, participants actively exchanged views on hydrogen and ammonia, synthetic methane, floating offshore wind, and the growing demand for clean electricity in the digital age. The session aimed to build momentum for public-private collaboration in the energy sector in Japan and the U.S.

3. Issuance of a joint statement

METI, MOFA, and DOS issued a joint statement as an outcome of the discussions in the dialogue.
