Technical Reference Document Released for Promoting Industrial Data Interoperability in the Ouranos Ecosystem
February 28, 2025
Joint Press Release with the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan
Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan and Digital Architecture Design Center of Information-Technology Promotion Agency (IPA DADC), Japan, has jointly published a technical reference document for the initiatives of Ouranos Ecosystem, namely “Whitepaper: Ouranos Ecosystem Dataspaces Reference Architecture Model.”
1. Background
METI has been promoting the Ouranos Ecosystem initiative as part of the efforts for achieving the Data Free Flow with Trust (DFFT) concept. The initiative aims to encourage companies and industries to interoperate multiple systems and to increase the utilization of data, thereby fortifying enterprise and industrial competitiveness under public-private cooperation while promoting the interoperability of data, systems, and businesses.
Concerning Ouranos Ecosystem Dataspaces (ODS) ―data spaces for industrial data interoperation while ensuring data sovereignty under the Ouranos Ecosystem, METI and IPA DADC have developed projects for discussions, design, research and development, demonstrations, and social implementation of architectures.
METI and the IPA DADC took into account the results of past discussions on dataspaces and finally released “Whitepaper: Ouranos Ecosystem Dataspaces Reference Architecture Model (ODS-RAM)” as a technical reference document under the Ouranos Ecosystem initiative, including hierarchical structure model of data spaces. Going forward, the ODS-RAM will continue to undergo agile and flexible version updates through discussions and dialogue with stakeholders of both industrial and academia.
2. Purpose
The ODS-RAM aims to provide an open opportunity for constructing service-driven dataspaces to address societal issues and create value within the Ouranos Ecosystem and establishes a technical paradigm for future system implementations, fostering the participation of various entities while ensuring interoperability.
3. Reader
The ODS-RAM targets a broad spectrum of domestic and foreign industries that support the initiative of Ouranos Ecosystem, particularly those responsible for designing architectures for data interoperability within the enterprise domain, for design and development belonging to development and data management departments of companies, and personnel of research institutions.
4. Download
ODS-RAM is available on the website of IPA DADC.
Under the Ouranos Ecosystem initiative, METI and IPA DADC will continue to update the version of ODS-RAM. If you are a private company or research institute interested in contributing to the initiative, contact the IPA DADC office through the link above.
5. What’s next
The detailed concepts and specifications are planned to be released as the ODS Protocol Specifications by FY2025, considering future demonstrations and evaluations. METI and IPA DADC advance the public implementation of use cases based on the ODS-RAM, aiming at the further expansion of the Ouranos Ecosystem.Resources of the ODS such as opensource software and guidebooks etc. are planned to be progressively released to promote the social implementation of the ODS-RAM.
