Minister Muto Visits the United States

March 11, 2025

From Sunday, March 9, to Wednesday, March 12, Mr. Muto Yoji, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Washington, D.C., the United States. During his stay, he had meetings with his counterparts.

On March 10 (Monday) local time, Minister Muto of Economy, Trade and Industry held meetings in Washington D.C. with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett.

Minister Muto conveyed Japan's willingness to further develop economic relations between Japan and the United States by increasing bilateral investment and employment through improvements in the business environment in both countries, as well as through cooperation aimed at strengthening each other’s industries.

During the meetings, Minister Muto expressed Japan's position that it should not be subject to the tariff measures announced by the U.S. government thus far. He explained Japan's views on the potential impact of these U.S. tariff measures on Japan's industries, as well as on the business environment, investment, and employment expansion in both Japan and the United States.

In addition, Minister Muto met with U.S. Senator William Hagerty (Republican, Tennessee) to exchange views on Japan-U.S. economic relations and other related topics.
