2. Outline
The Asia CCUS Network Forum is an international industry-academia-government platform launched in 2021 to share knowledge on CCUS utilization across Asia and develop a business environment for such utilization.
At this Asia CCUS Network Forum, which marked its fifth annual meeting, participants discussed (1) issues faced in achieving cross-border CCS and the roles of governments, (2) initiatives by private companies to establish sustainable and economic cross-border CCS business, (3) presentations on trends and leading case examples of technological development for CO2 shipping, and (4) development trends in cutting-edge technologies including for carbon recycling.
During the meetings, participants emphasized the importance of future multilateral cooperation to reduce costs by sharing storage sites and infrastructure and commonizing technological specifications, and to implement initiatives aimed at mitigating risks related to CO2 supply chains, including disruptions. The discussions also covered technologies for low-temperature and low-pressure ship transport of liquefied CO2, a field in which Japan leads the world. When developed, this technology will enable the use of larger tanks to transport liquefied CO2 more efficiently. In addition, presentations showcased outstanding technologies of companies leading the world in CCUS/carbon-recycling, including low-cost CO2 separation and capture technologies currently developed by Japanese companies, as well as international cooperation initiatives and ERIA’s knowledge-sharing efforts.
In collaboration with the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC), Japan will continue sharing its experience and technological achievements with other countries in Asia, contributing to the development of a region-wide platform aimed at proliferating CCUS in this region.
