Parliamentary Vice-Minister Kato Visits Perth, Australia

Mr. Kato Akiyoshi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Perth, the Commonwealth of Australia, from Sunday, October 5, to Thursday, October 7, to attend the 62nd Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference. During his visit, he exchanged views with the Honourable Madeleine King, Australia’s Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia, and the Honourable Roger Cook, Premier of Western Australia.

1. Participation in the 62nd Annual Joint Business Conference (Keynote speech)

On Monday, October 6, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Kato delivered a keynote speech at the 62nd Annual Joint Business Conference, sharing the following three perspectives toward further deepening the relationship between Australia and Japan.

  1. Cooperation on a comprehensive supply chain for critical minerals
  2. Enhancement of a stable investment environment for energy resources, which aligns with decarbonization
  3. Cooperation in advanced industries, including defense and space.

Premier Cook and Minister King congratulated the success of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, in their opening remarks and keynote speech, respectively. They also highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen the relations between Japan and Australia.

2. Bilateral meetings

(1) Meeting with Ms. King, Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia

On Sunday, October 5, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Kato held a meeting with Minister King to exchange views on securing an investment environment that will facilitate the stable supply of LNG and other resources, and on cooperating to build a comprehensive supply chain between Japan and Australia.

(2) Meeting with Mr. Cook, Premier of Western Australia

On Monday, October 6, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Kato met with Western Australia’s Premier Cook to exchange views toward strengthening the relationship between Japan and Western Australia through cooperation on a stable supply of LNG and other energy resources, the transition to hydrogen, ammonia and other clean energy, and development of critical mineral resources. The premier also expressed his anticipation of the upgraded Mogami-class frigate project.
