State Minister Yamada Attends 2025 G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting

On Thursday, October 30, and Friday, October 31, Mr. Yamada Kenji, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the 2025 G7 Energy and Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in Toronto, Canada. In addition to attending the meeting, he also held meetings with ministers from the United States, the Italian Republic, Canada, the Commonwealth of Australia, and Ukraine, and visited the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.

2.Bilateral meetings with other countries

Taking the opportunity of the ministerial meeting, State Minister Yamada held bilateral meetings with ministers from the United States, the Italian Republic, Canada, Ukraine, and Australia to exchange views on cooperation in the energy sector.

(1) Meeting with H.E. Mr. Chris Wright, United States Secretary of Energy

State Minister Yamada met with U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and they exchanged views on matters including cooperation on energy security, as well as bilateral cooperation on LNG, critical minerals, and nuclear power.

(2) Meeting with H.E. Mr. Gilberto Pichetto-Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Italy

State Minister Yamada met with H.E. Mr. Gilberto Picchetto-Fratin, Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Italy, and they exchanged views on matters including bilateral cooperation on gas security and hydrogen. In addition, a Memorandum of Cooperation on gas security was signed between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) and the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security of the Italian Republic (MASE).

(3) Meeting with H.E. Mr. Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Canada

State Minister Yamada met with H.E. Mr. Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Canada, and they exchanged views on matters including bilateral cooperation on LNG, nuclear power, batteries, and critical minerals. Based on the meeting, a joint statement was issued regarding cooperation in the field of energy resources between METI and the Canadian Ministry of Natural Resources.

(4) Meeting with H.E. Ms. Madeleine King, Australia’s Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia

State Minister Yamada met with H.E. Ms. Madeleine King, Australia’s Minister for Resources and Minister for Northern Australia, and they exchanged views on matters including cooperation on critical minerals, LNG, coal, and sustainable fuels.

(5) Meeting with H.E. Ms. Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Energy of Ukraine

State Minister Yamada met with H.E. Ms. Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Energy of Ukraine, and they exchanged views on matters including Japan's efforts in the energy sector and other areas in relation to support for Ukraine, which was one of the main themes of the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting.

3. Visit to the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.

As part of the meeting's program, State Minister Yamada visited the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, where construction of the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR), jointly developed by Japanese and U.S. companies, is underway.
