METI, QatarEnergy, and JERA Sign MOU on Cooperation for Emergency Additional LNG Supply to Japan
February 4, 2026
On Tuesday, February 3, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), state-owned QatarEnergy, and JERA Co., Inc., signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on cooperation for additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply to Japan during emergency situations, with the aim of securing a stable energy supply to Japan.
This MOU provides that, if global LNG supply-demand conditions become tight or large-scale natural disasters in Japan occur and METI determines that the stable domestic energy supply is threatened, it may request QatarEnergy to consider supplying additional LNG to Japan, and the parties will then consult on appropriate response measures. In this way, this MOU contributes to securing a stable energy supply to Japan.
