Outline of work

Support the METI PR team in developing official English language documents related to policy initiatives and assist with analysis of Japan-related coverage in the international media (on a work-from-home basis).

  1. Editing and rewriting of official METI English language documents. Respond to inquiries from METI officials on English usage and assist them with the development of English language materials.
  2. Assist with media analysis reports tracking relevant coverage in the English language international press including newspapers, magazines and major news websites.
  3. Participate in planning meetings as required.

6,000 yen per hour (inclusive of tax, commutation expenses, internet and other communication expenses)

Duration of assignment

1 year (April 1, 2022 ~ March 31, 2023)
*Please note this is a 1-year fixed contract with no automatic extension. Interested applicants will be required to reapply for the following year.

Schedule of work

Successful candidates will be assigned 1 or 2 days of work per week in principle on a work-from-home basis. Working days will not include Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays or the year-end break.
Each working day will comprise of a 3.5-hour shift—10:30AM - 15:00PM with a one-hour lunch break from noon to 1PM.
*However, on occasion successful candidates may be required to work outside of regular hours for which they will be remunerated at the same hourly rate. *Please note that shift times may be adjusted during peak summer months.
*On-site work will be required a few times a year as required for activities such as the maintenance of the PC lent by METI.

Key requirements

Applicants will only be considered that meet the following requirements.

  1. English must be your mother tongue
  2. Professional experience of editing official English language documents for government agencies or private sector companies to the standard required by METI. (Editing ability will be assessed through a written test.
  3. Enough Japanese language fluency be able to smoothly communicate in Japanese in person and by e-mail. (Japanese language ability will be assessed in candidate interviews.)
  4. Appropriate work-from-home environment required including high-speed internet connection and information security in accordance with METI policies
  5. As part of the METI PR team, candidates must be responsible individuals who can take direction from ministry officials and conduct themselves in a highly professional manner at all times.

Resume in English and Japanese with a short cover letter to support your candidacy highlighting your skills and experience (Japanese or English).
Candidates who pass the initial screening process will then be required to complete an editing test and attend an in-person interview. (Please note, METI will only contact candidates that have passed the screening process.) The application deadline is February 4, 2022.
Please note that the documents submitted to support applications will only be used for the recruitment process for these posts and will be responsibly disposed of by METI once the process is complete.
