Job Description for English Proofreaders

Outline of work

Editing and rewriting of official METI documents in English. Respond to inquiries from METI officials on English usage and assist them with the development of English language materials (on a work-from-home basis).

Duration of assignment

1 year (from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027)
*Please note this is a 1-year fixed contract with no automatic extension.
Interested applicants will be required to reapply for the following year.

Schedule of work

Successful candidates will be assigned one to three days of work per week in principle on a work-from-home basis. Working days will exclude national holidays and the year-end break. 
Each working day will comprise of a 3.5-hour shift—10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break from noon to 1:00 p.m.
*Occasionally, successful candidates may be required to work outside regular hours and will be remunerated at the same hourly rate. 

Key requirements

Applicants will only be considered that meet the following requirements.

  1. English must be your mother tongue.
  2. Professional experience of editing official English language documents for government agencies or private sector companies to the standard required by METI. (Editing ability will be assessed through a written test.)
  3. Enough Japanese language fluency be able to smoothly communicate in Japanese in person and by e-mail. (Japanese language ability will be assessed in candidate interviews.)
  4. An appropriate work-from-home environment that includes a high-speed internet connection (secure Wi-Fi) with information security in accordance with METI’s policies is required.
  5. Candidates must be responsible individuals who can accept direction from ministry officials and act with a high level of professionalism as members of the METI PR team.
