Question-and-Answer Session
Advanced Semiconductor Export Control
Q: Since last weekend, there have been reports of moves to restrict exports of advanced semiconductors from Japan, the United States, and the Netherlands. Please tell us what METI has in mind regarding the control of exports of sensitive technologies including advanced semiconductors, and how it will tackle this issue in the future.
A: I am aware of the reports regarding semiconductor manufacturing equipment. I will refrain from giving details since it involves matters of a diplomatic nature.
Furthermore, we have been communicating and exchanging views with the countries concerned regarding the export controls. As part of these efforts, I have exchanged views on a wide range of topics with Secretary of Commerce Raimondo in the U.S. in early January. In general terms, we have placed strict controls on advanced and sensitive technologies in accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act from the viewpoint of maintaining international peace and safety. Based on this policy, we will continue to take appropriate measures while considering trends in other countries.
Nissan and Renault
Q: Nissan and Renault announced the review of their capital relations. Please give us your comments on the matter.
A: I heard about Nissan's announcement yesterday. I am aware that the two sides are having constructive discussions, and I welcome the news. Since this is a matter between private companies concerning their management, I will refrain from making any further comments, but I hope that the partnership will proceed in a win-win manner that the relevant parties are fully satisfied with, and I welcome the fact that the discussions are progressing in that direction.
Advanced Semiconductor Export Control
Q: This is related to the controls on semiconductor-related exports to China. If Japan joins in the regulations, it may have a negative impact on Japanese companies. Please give us your general thoughts on how you will strengthen economic security while ensuring smooth corporate activities.
A: I would like to reiterate that we have placed strict controls on advanced and sensitive technologies in accordance with the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act from the viewpoint of maintaining international peace and safety. We will continue to take appropriate measures while considering the current situation and trends in other countries. I will refrain from answering further.
